How I Lost 15 Pounds and Got Fit in Just 90 Days


Gerhard Erasmus, 34, shares with Men’s Health how he lost weight and built muscle through a transformation challenge on the Morsia app created by bodybuilder and coach Matt Morsia, a.k.a. “MattDoesFitness” on YouTube.

After spending two weeks in Zanzibar, I came back to Dubai and saw myself in all the photos and realized that I had gained some weight and was out of shape. At exactly the same time, the Morsia Challenge launched for this first time. I didn’t have any excuse not to make a change, so I took on the challenge!

While I wasn’t working with a coach in person, the knowledge section of the app was pretty much my trainer; it answered all my questions, plus I have been a subscriber of Matt’s channel for a few years now, so I have a fair understanding of calories in vs calories out, and the various workouts. My main motivation was doing it for myself, for my health and sanity. After a long tough day at work, a Morsia workout did the trick to boost my morale.

The most difficult was finding time to fit in a workout in my schedule; I have a very demanding job, so my time is limited. Whenever I could squeeze in a workout, I would. This often meant working out at either 5 a.m. or very late at night, but it was worth every single workout. I have a quote set to my phone wallpaper: “Discipline equals freedom.”

My biggest takeaway from the entire challenge was to be consistent with the workouts and my diet. There were a lot of times that I had to say No to a carrot cake! I followed a push-pull-legs split six days a week and kept my calories between 2,000 and 2,200 per day, with about 180 grams of protein every day. Looking back, the 90-day challenge made me more aware of calories and the different calorie amounts in all the various food types… If I could take my food scale to a restaurant, I would.

In total I lost 7.1 kgs (around 15 pounds) in the 90 days, and I started seeing serious results after about six weeks with the app. The biggest change was the shrinkage of my waist; I went from a 36 to 32 inches, but also, my t-shirts did start looking better on me, I was filling them out better with a more defined chest, biceps and shoulders. My girlfriend was absolutely blown away, and she was by far the biggest support I received. She was inspired to register for the current Morsia transformation challenge!

I’m busy right now with that second 90-day challenge, and am down another 3 kgs (6.6 pounds) to 80.5 kgs (187 pounds). My next goal is to get down to 75 kgs (165 pounds). If I could offer any advice to somebody on their own weight loss journey, it would be to weigh your peanut butter, count your calories, and trust the process. Be patient and stay consistent!
